Damn Big Heroes :: "There Is No 'Try'."
Relationship Maps are OK for a GM, but a 'layered technique' would build investment and some organic style to the game start. My recent example of PC sketches shows how little we know at game start where relationships will overlap or transform.
These sketches don't point a romance at any combo, though you could argue that the most compatible are L1 and L2. My point?
Some of the best "media romances" are the unlikely ones. The combos you would never go for in real life. Personally, I am a sucker for screwball romances and it is a recurring theme that the couple would be -crazy- to fall for each other.

Are these unlikely pairings? Yes. One might say deliberately unlikely, which brings me to my next point. What is the 'play reward' and challenge of a romance game? Could it be entertaining the lurker/other player crowd rather than scoring the romantic interest?
robbing from Simone:
character B: "I am your designated SWF. I like flowers and garage sales."
character A: "I hate flowers and garage sales."
character B: "Well, but you like me. I am dark and mysterious."
character A: "I prefer open and spontaneous."
character B: "Well, but you like me. I am...."
character A: "Oh for Lir's sake! You are your favorite subject aren't you. Kiss me!"
--sudden clinch--kiss--
character A: "There. A moment's peace. Thank you. I'll treasure it."

sketch C:
loyal, monster, muscle, willing to follow square shooter who keeps word, hates dark siders, family important
sketch H:
fast talker, scoundrel, may reform for right 'price', I always know what I'm doing, past follows me around, lucky
sketch L1:
courageous, kickass, can't care about folks who don't care, hates dark siders, committed to rebellion, if you don't know what you're doing--get out of my way, I make my luck
sketch L2:
young, nimble, restless, impatient, family important, don't fit in, pilot nerd, don't like farming, not quite ready for prime time
These sketches don't point a romance at any combo, though you could argue that the most compatible are L1 and L2. My point?
