Having Asked: how much do you all like/hate doing the 'homework' of designing/selecting characters and getting the gist of the scenario from the GM?

It sounds like:
  1. most folks would like the choice between pre-gens and BringYerOwnCharacters.
  2. most folks would like the play system to have minimum tinkering
  3. most folks would like the PCs to be essential to the plot
  4. most folks would like backstory to be a quick kibbitz in the 10-15 minutes of slot-start
  5. most folks would like more slots to have Independant story (and perhaps serial/sequence applies)
  6. character quizzes are bad
  7. prep time over 30 minutes is bad

I'd agree with all of those except 2 -- I don't have a problem with massive system modifications (or even systems that aren't Amber). But if the GM is going to do that, s/he had better be prepared to assist heavily in translating the player's concept into a character in the system.

I don't think 3-5 necessarily always have to be true, but they're good "best practices" in most cases, and should be departed from only for good reasons. Does that make sense?

I should also say that I recognize my preferences aren't universal -- that there are players who LOVE putting in lots of out-of-game time. Some disagree strongly with points 6 and 7, and probably with 1 as well (they may not want anyone to be playing pregens under the belief that the characters won't be deep enough; this at least used to be Erick's absolute policy for his games).

Honestly, I actually like character quizzes - I find my character's voice comes out faster that way. I also like obessively running numbers to tweak stats to match concepts - I set up No Higher Authority so that I got to do that part for the players, while pushing off responsibilty for the plot onto them, since my GM weakness is plot. Where the system is non-standard, though, as a player, I like to have GMs tdo the same for me - let me describe what I want, and walk me through the numbers that'll match that.
